What Is Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy and Clinical Hypnosis?

    Hypnosis

Hypnosis is the act of guiding someone into the trance state. Different experts define the trance state differently, but they almost always refer to:
    A deep state of relaxation.
    Hyperfocus and concentration.
    Increased suggestibility.

If that sounds commonplace, it’s because it is. Most of us go in and out of the trance state regularly. If you’ve ever zoned out on your daily commute, fell into a reverie while listening to music, or found yourself immersed in the world of a book or movie, you’ve been in the trance state.

    Hypnotherapy:

To understand the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy, think of hypnosis as a tool and hypnotherapy as the use of a tool. Hypnotherapy is the practice of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes.

In other words, if you are a professional mental health therapist or medical doctor and you’re using hypnosis to help a client overcome a mental or physical condition, you’re practicing hypnotherapy.

    Clinical Hypnosis:

Clinical hypnosis is delivered by a trained professional who uses advanced hypnosis to treat a variety of medical and psychological problems.

Does hypnosis involve the loss of control?

Due to the media most people are led to believe that hypnosis can trick you into quacking like a duck or are made to lose control. The idea that hypnotists can take over the minds of their subjects and control their actions is, of course, an entirely media-driven myth. This is due to hypnosis being used to entertain by stage shows and not how it really works.

In the trance state, you control all of your actions, you can hear everything around you, and you cannot be forced to do something against your will. Hypnosis can not be effective unless you are willing and wish to make the change. You work together with your therapist to promote positive changes. Your conscious mind will only accept suggestions that it deems beneficial to you. Any suggestions that do not fit your own moral and ethical values will not be accepted.

    How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

The most powerful feature of the trance state is how it connects our conscious minds to our unconscious minds.

Our mind has been compared to a computer and the unconscious mind to a computer’s file system. Our unconscious is like our hard drive, where we store every experience, emotion, and thought we’ve had. This is not normally accessible to us via our conscious mind but it drives all our emotions, thoughts and behaviours and ultimately our health both physical and mental. Normally you are not able to access the unconscious mind unless you achieve a relaxed, hyper-focused state.

A trained hypnotherapist, will be able to guide you in achieving your predetermined desired therapy goal by talking to your unconscious mind. In essence, you are able to change or alter any file that might be detrimental to you or your health. This can not be effective unless you wish to make this change and you are clear about what it is you wish to change. The therapists only acts as a guide to the changes you already wish to achieve.
